My Gripe With Dettol No-Touch Hand Wash System!

This isn't a particularly glamorous post but I have to post it, I've been meaning to for quite a while now but I always get distracted with something else, and promptly forget. I've just seen the advert again, so I thought it time I posted, before it leaves my brain again!

There's been something bugging me about this product ever since I saw it advertised. Sure, it looks like a great way to avoid germs at first glance; but think about it... when you touch a soap pump to wash your hands, you're obviously just about to wash your hands. You wash your hands to get rid of germs/dirt so what is the point of avoiding germs on the soap pump if you're going to be washing them anyway?

I can see the point of automatic taps, as you touch the tap after washing (although in the home this won't be such a problem as I'm sure most of you will clean them regularly), and even automatic doors so there's nothing physically there (and possibly contaminated) to touch, again mostly for public loo's as they're touched both BEFORE and AFTER washing.

Some people may not like the idea of a few germs lying around on the normal soap dispenser even if they're no longer on their hands - a cheaper option is still to just give the bottle/dispenser of your normal handwash a wipe when cleaning or even when washing your hands; but I actually think a few germs here and there probably do us good anyway, to help to build up our immune systems!

After looking at the website, I notice it plays on the importance of safety for people's children, which to me is a bit concerning (see below for a quote and the picture used), as it kind of implies that if you don't use their system that your children will be germ ridden and in danger. Nonsense, I grew up using bar soaps as standard and I'm still alive!

"Handwashing is one of the most important steps you and your children can take to help you stay away from harmful germs that can cause diseases and with the DETTOL No-Touch Hand Soap System, you and your family will never have to touch a germy soap pump again. It's ideal for use in the kitchen or bathroom. "

If you wash your hands properly (between the fingers etc) and regularly, and also use hand sanitisers between washes when you've come into contact with something that looks particularly germy but have no proper washing facilities, then you should be fairly confident about the germ status of your hands.

As far as I can tell, this is really just a pointless, overly priced, battery hogging hand gel aimed at scaring people into buying it for fear of getting a few germs on their hands... just before they wash them!!

What do you think ladies? Have any of you bought one? Is there something I'm missing with my opinion on this product?

Please note, I have never used this product - these are just my views from what I know about it.

  4. I totally agree. It's all part of this big obsession with being spotlessly clean all the time, but people forget that if you don't allow your kids any contact with germs then how are their bodies going to learn to fight off infections?

I'm not implying that we should allow our children to live in filthy pig-sty's, but hopefully you know what I mean :)
